How to Replace an replacement audi car key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two pins for the connector and they perform different functions but the most effective method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, replace and the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine with no sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, but i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to an engine shutdown.

Some of the signs of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is deteriorating and needs replacing. The good news is that they are very cheap and easy to find particularly in the case of a Bosch sensor, which is what we have. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be an option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of many issues in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission in your audi a1 key because it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other components of the car to be affected.

honda-logo.pngThe G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU is then able to process the signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and Audi A4 Key Replacement pin T26a/12. You should see the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these points. This is a common part that is found across the new audi key 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones could be available in wrecking yards.
