How to Replace the Ignition Key on the Saab 9-3

Most modern Saab models utilize transponders instead of a key made of metal to unlock the vehicle and allow it to start. The issue with this is that the reprogrammable battery inside the key-fob will eventually wear out and won't hold a charge any longer. This is particularly when you keep using the same key with the same lock.

A professional locksmith can change the battery fairly easily. If you've got the right tools, and a little patience you can do it yourself. The first step is to remove the key-fob. This is done by inserting a flathead screwdriver into the slot located in middle of the case. The plastic is thin and it is susceptible to being damaged.

Once the case is opened, you can prepare the new key by combining the lower section of the key that was used previously with the transponder and banana on the new key. This will ensure the new key is properly connected to your CIM and could be a major difference when replacing the sole key on your Saab 9-3.

How do you replace the ignition Key on a Saab 900

If you don't have two keys you'll have to remove the steering wheel and dashboard for access to the ignition. Begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable. After the battery has been disconnected, you can remove the trim and dashboard pieces around the steering wheel. Once the dash is taken off, you can push a screwdriver through the opening on the back of the ignition switch and take it out.

The ignition cylinder is fitted with a key lock which can prevent the vehicle from starting if it doesn't have the key inside it. If the ignition switch isn't working properly, you should check if the key is in the lock or snared inside the barrel. It is also recommended to rotate your keys and keep them clean to prevent bending.

The metal part of classic Saab keys is simple to copy and does not pose a serious threat to theft of vehicles. The real protection is the electronic component that's in the key fob, which has a chip inside that detects the car when it's inserted into the ignition switch.

Saab's anti-theft system has relied on this technology for more than a decade. It's not as effective as an actual lock on the door however it makes stealing your own car significantly more difficult. Every Saab owner needs to keep a spare Saab key in their car.

The majority of new Saabs come with two keys. However, they can be added by a dealer using a special handheld device referred to as a Tech-2. The cost can be under $400 for the transmitter+transponder (different than the metal key blade/shell that opens the doors and turns the ignition cylinder). The only exception is the NG 9-3 vehicles, which come with modern, more advanced features that require a separate key-fob, and use a different method of operation.

How to replace the ignition Key in the Saab XC90

The first step is to prepare the new key. Before you begin, disable the anti-theft system by placing blocks under the rear wheels and activating your handbrake. To open the case, put an flathead screwdriver into the slot in the middle and gently work it. The case should split easily, and once you've got it open, you'll get access to the internal electronics. Use a flathead screwdriver, which will gently pry open the electronic components.
